Birutė Hill, or Dune, is located in the northern part of the Amber Museum Park. It is a relict dune, known as the highest dune of the Palanga seaside.
It has been marked on all major maps since the 17th century. The name of Birute Hill is associated with the romantic legend of the holy fire-breathing maiden Birute, wife of Duke Kestutis and mother of Vytautas. Archaeologists excavating Birute Hill in 1989 found the remains of a pagan temple (cave) and a palaeoastronomical observatory that existed at the top of Birute Hill in the 14th-15th centuries.
